ANGELICO, Fra
(b. ca. 1400, Vicchio nell Mugello, d. 1455, Roma)

Madonna of Humility

c. 1419
Tempera and gold on panel, 102 x 58 cm
Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, Pisa

This painting formed the central panel of a dismembered altarpiece and is enclosed in its original frame. It was commissioned by the illustrious Florentine Giugni family. The patronage by so prominent a family indicates the professional stature the painter had achieved at this time. The panel was inspired by the paintings of this theme by Lorenzo Monaco and his workshop.
