ANGUISSOLA, Lucia
(b. 1538, Cremona, d. 1565, Cremona)

Self-Portrait

1557
Oil on panel, 28 x 20 cm
Castello Sforzesco, Milan

This is the only known self-portrait by Lucia Anguissola, younger sister of Sofonisba. She portrays herself sitting down in an elegant but modest attire. She wears dark clothing under which appears a white blouse. In her left hand she holds a small book open on her lap, while her right hand rests on her chest, She is a young and virtuous woman lifting her gaze towards the viewer.

It seems from this painting that Lucia was not less talented then her sister, Sofonisba.
