AVERCAMP, Hendrick
(b. 1585, Amsterdam, d. 1634, Kampen)

A Panoramic Winter Landscape

c. 1610
Oil on oak panel, 69 x 109 cm
Private collection

This panoramic winter landscape contains a multitude of figures on a frozen river. It is an early work which, like Avercamp's other early pictures, is packed full of figures on the ice - too many to count - while many of his later works are sparser.

The painting was originally painted on a panel comprising two horizontal panels, probably of fairly similar width. After the artist's death, a small section of the top edge of the upper panel was trimmed, presumably to remove the bevel, and a third horizontal panel was glued to it.
