Both Louis-Pierre Baltard, a Neo-classical architect, and his son Victor Baltard held important official posts in the city of Paris and both became professors at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Despite this conservative background, however, the latter is best known for his innovative use of new materials and techniques, especially in the iron-and-glass design for Les Halles Centrales (begun 1854; destroyed), Paris.
