BARTOLOMEO, Fra
(b. 1472, Firenze, d. 1517, Pian' di Mugnone)

Christ Crowned with Thorns

-
Fresco on tile, 52 x 37 cm
Museo di San Marco, Florence

Fra Bartolomeo depicted over time a sequence of intimate saints' heads, most for the Dominican-run hospice near Fiesole. Executed in some cases on the unusual, modest supports of terracotta and roof tile, these frescoes reveal the artist at his most relaxed and technically unrestrained.
