BARTOLOMEO, Fra
(b. 1472, Firenze, d. 1517, Pian' di Mugnone)

The Incarnation with Six Saints

1515
Panel, 96 x 76 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

In his later paintings Fra Bartolomeo had a moderate, precious manner. The Incarnation with Six Saints, signed and dated on one of the steps in the centre, was painted for export to Francis I, king of France. Conceived in the format of an altarpiece, only the motif of Jerome and Francis sharing a cross is a concession to the reduced pictorial field, though the technique is much more vibrant than that found on his large panels.
