BARTOLOMEO, Fra
(b. 1472, Firenze, d. 1517, Pian' di Mugnone)

Prophet Isaiah

c. 1516
Panel, 168 x 108 cm
Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence

This massive figure with heavy proportions belongs to a language that has been associated with Raphael and Michelangelo and their Roman activities. Oddly enough, Fra Bartolomeo had a considerable impact on the young Raphael who visited Florence as a young man in the interest of refining his art, and perhaps also on Michelangelo. Now the tables appear to have been turned, and the older painter reveals an awareness of the most progressive classicizing trends in the work of his younger contemporaries.
