Rest on the Flight into Egypt

c. 1500
Tempera and oil on canvas, 135 x 114 cm
Palazzo Vescovile, Pienza

Together with Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael Fra Bartolommeo created the high Renaissance style, characterized by an almost abstract expression of ease and accomplishment, formal quality and balance. The Rest on the Flight into Egypt is a fine example of that style with its conscious use of elementary vertical and horizontal lines and the simple scheme which governs the play of light. The Virgin seems to recall a Virgin type favoured by Donatello in shallow-carved reliefs.
