The Road to Calvary

1575
Oil on slate, 46 x 42 cm
Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest

Comparing this painting with another version of the same subject painted by the artist twenty years earlier it can be observed that the his Mannerist fever had abated and the typical Venetian manner of painting, schooled by the works of Titian and Tintoretto, had become the dominant element in his art, but his power of expression had noticeably declined.
