Colourful and contrived, but symmetrically arranged flower still-lifes was the norm throughout the first two decades of the seventeenth century in both the Northern and Southern Netherlands. In Antwerp especially Osias Beert the Elder put his own stamp on the genre. His flower pieces, in their rather contrived elegance and artful composition seem rather closer to the work of the northern Ambrosius Bosschaert and Roelandt Savery than that of the Flemish Jan Brueghel.
