BEHAM, Barthel
(b. 1502, Nürnberg, d. 1540, Italy)

Portrait of Duke Ludwig X of Bavaria

1531
Oil on panel, 69 x 59 cm
Liechtenstein Museum, Vienna

Barthel Beham was Dürer's most talented successor. His Portrait of Duke Ludwig X of Bavaria is distinguished by its exceptional quality: the fur and hair are executed with meticulous precision, as are the highlights on his forehead and the lines of his face. Noteworthy is the depiction of Ludwig's left hand resting on a parapet: it reaches out of the picture frame towards the viewer.
