Gottfried Semper, the intellectual mentor of Berlage, held the view that the craftsmen and architects should use each material in a way appropriate to it. He, therefore, rejected, for example, Thonet's technique of bending wood. That was not right for wood that was treating it like metal. In his own furniture, Berlage followed this doctrine.
