The Four Evangelists

c. 1447
Fresco
San Francesco, Arezzo

Bicci di Lorenzo and his workshop painted the four evangelists in the webs of the cross-vault of the Cappella Maggiore in San Francesco. Instead of representing the four evangelical figures writing or reading, accompanied only by their standard attributes (Matthew: angel, Mark: lion, Luke: bull, John: eagle), all but Mathew play host to unusual visitors. The Virgin Mary supported by two angels speaks to St Luke (right web in the reproduction); a small image of God-the-Father holding the crucifix appears to St John (bottom web); St Mark converses with St Peter (left web).
