BICCI DI LORENZO
(b. 1373, Firenze, d. 1452, Firenze)

Stia Triptych

1414
Tempera and gold on panel, 180 x 160 cm
Santa Maria Assunta, Stia

The central panel of the triptych seems inspired by the miraculous image in Santissima Annunziata, and the overlapping saints resemble those of Agnolo Gaddi in their massive drapery and their placid features. The crowded space and slanting perspective of the Virgin's room and throne typify the inconsistent rendering of perspective that prevailed in Florence at the time.
