BIGARNY, Felipe
(b. ca. 1475, Langres, d. 1542, Toledo)

Main Altar

1523-26
Polychrome wood
Condestable's Chapel of the Cathedral, Burgos

The architectural elements of the Burgos altar are probably the work of Bigarny, as is also the Annunciation group, while the Holy Family must be attributed to Diego de Siloe. This altar exemplifies the last phase of Bigarny's art, showing that the sculptor had assimilated the Renaissance style: in both decorative elements and also in the modelling of the figures, the Italian influence is now marked. Bigarny, one of the group of artists whom Charles V gathered about him, formulated in his Burgos altar the altar-type of offical art.
