Head of Francesco Foscari

1438-42
Marble, height 36 cm
Palazzo Ducale, Venice

This head, now in the Museum of the Ducal Palace, was commissioned by Francesco Foscari for the Porta della Carta. The end of the doge's nose and much of his left eyebrow are modern replacements.

Recently a quite different attribution and date were suggested, and the identity of the subject was also debated. According to this new analysis, the subject is Doge Cristoforo Moro, and the head was produced by Antonio Rizzo in about 1462-64.
