Jules Grévy

Oil on canvas, 152 x 116 cm

Léon Bonnat made a name for himself in the 1860s as a historical painter and portraitist. This painting of Jules Grévy, who was voted president of France in 1879 at the advanced age of 72, is the epitome of an official state portrait in the Third Republic.
