BOUGUEREAU, William-Adolphe
(b. 1825, La Rochelle, d. 1905, La Rochelle)

Bathers

1884
Oil on canvas, 201 x 129 cm
Art Institute, Chicago

There was an unbridgeable gap between Bouguereau's art and that of Renoir, or indeed Cézanne. The gap remained even when Bouguereau attempted a subject such as bathers, which had no ideological strings attached.
