Mercier Square, Mechelen

The Neo-classical style dominated the look of the streets in Mechelen well past 1835. The Kardinaal Mercier Square, built from 1836 to 1837 offers the best example of this architecture. The city architect François Jean Bouwens, who led this project, surrounded the square with many successfully conceived an executed Neo-classicist edifices. Today they form the imposing entrance to the city of Mechelen.
