Study for the Tempiettoc. 1502Drawing Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence
|
This study was executed for the Tempietto, a small church in the courtyard of San Pietro in Montorio in Rome. The courtyard is believed to be the site of St. Peter's martyrdom. The architect clearly worked from a historical typology: individual architectural elements such as columns, entablature, and vault acknowledge a debt to classical structures. The resulting centralized building represented a new type of Christian architecture. View the ground plan of Tempietto.
