Josef van Bredael continued the tradition of landscape painting established by Jan Brueghel the Elder into the eighteenth century. The present composition derives from a signed work by Brueghel of around 1604. Six versions of the painting by Bredael are known, some of them contain Bredael's own motifs added to Brueghel's original composition. In the present version Bredael extended the format to include a horse-drawn cart and a herd of cows in the middle foreground, and balanced the resulting open space in the horizon with a farmhouse behind the windmill.
