The composition derives from a painting by Jan Brueghel the Elder. Six versions of this composition are known, but only the present version includes the horse-driven cart, a motif that does not feature in Brueghel's original. The portrayal of the horse is particularly characteristic with its slender legs, a powerful body and a strangely small head. He shapes his motifs and volumes with a light stroke which gives the impression of life and movement.
