Landscape with Boats on a River

1611-12
Fresco
Palazzo-Pallavicini-Rospigliosi, Rome

This lunette fresco in the Casino del Patriarca Biondo, Palazzo-Pallavicini-Rospigliosi was inspired by Annibale Carracci's lunette painting executed for Cardinal Pietro Aldorandini in c. 1603. The formula of large narrative landscape with diminutive staffage became the inescapable manifesto of seventeenth-century landscape painting for artists of all tendencies.
