BRIL, Paul
(b. 1554, Antwerpen, d. 1626, Roma)

Self-Portrait

1595-1600
Oil on canvas, 71 x 78 cm
Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, Providence

Bril's Self-Portrait is intended to proclaim his artistic and cultural achievements as well as his familiarity with music. The painting on the easel is a characteristic example of the type of landscape that Bril painted before he had fully adapted to the taste of Italian patrons.
