BROECK, Crispin van den
(b. 1523, Mechelen, d. 1591, Antwerpen)

Abraham and the Three Angels

1580s
Pen, brown ink and wash, black chalk on greyish-blue paper, 232 x 357 mm
Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest

Van den Broeck presented the biblical scene based on his own experience of observing human behaviour. Abraham widely extended arms and forward leaning posture convincingly convey his reverence for the guests and his joy felt over being able to invite them.
