Jan Brueghel the Elder, also known as "Velvet" Brueghel, treated landscapes, mythological themes, flower painting, and allegories with considerable originality. He was employed in the service of the Spanish Archduke Alberto and Duchess Isabel Clara Eugenia, a fact that explains the many paintings of his in Spain, mainly in the Prado.
