BRUEGHEL, Jan the Elder
(b. ca. 1568, Brussel, d. 1625, Antwerpen)

Landscape with Hunters

1594-95
Oil on copper, 24 x 36 cm
Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nantes

This landscape was painted when Brueghel was in Rome between 1594 and 1595. The way in which distance is drawn or suggested, the wooden glades on the left and clearings on the right, connects this small painting with the works being executed at the same period by Paul Bril, with whom Jan Brueghel was in close contact during his stay in Rome.
