Village Scene with Figures and Cows

1609
Oil on copper, 11 x 17 cm
Residenzgalerie, Salzburg

Working with fine brushes on a small copper plate, the artist depicted in meticulous detail everyday life in a village in all its ordinariness. A few isolated houses on the fringe of a deciduous forest line the river bank, a small group of villagers stand chatting, a kitchen garden is tended, a mother is occupied with her children, cows are grazing.

The subject-matter accounts for an entire group of paintings in the artist's oeuvre.
