Vault in the Hall of the Firmament (detail)

1558
Fresco
Palazzo Chiericati, Vicenza

The Hall of the Firmament is a rectangular space distinguished by a soaring, barrel-vaulted ceiling, where a unified composition unfolds to spectacular effect. This detail of the ceiling shows the proud, white Pegasus with wings flared, symbol of day, and gentle, tawny Equiculus, representing night.
