Carlo Bugatti often covered his pieces with vellum or parchment, with inlays of brass and pewter in the wooden supporting members, as seen in the present secretary. In his earlier work, the vellum is sometimes painted in brown monochrome with Japanese-inspired motifs, but after about 1900, he favoured painted, polychrome geometric designs.
