CAMPI, Antonio
(b. 1523, Cremona, d. 1587, Cremona)

The Martyrdom of St Lawrence

1581
Oil on canvas, 28 x 19 cm
San Paolo Converso, Milan

This painting can be considered an example of "ruthless illusionism": unlike Titian's celebrated "impressionistic" prototype, it is created wholly through a foreshortened sequence of muscular masses receding into a dark background. It is one of Campi's most significant works in terms of dramatic effect and closeness to Caravaggio.
