This painting belongs to the series of four genre paintings formerly located in the guest quarters of the Hieronymite monastery of San Sigismondo in Cremona. The four canvases now in the Brera - the others are the Fruit Seller, the Kitchen, and the Chicken Vendors - are similar in content and have been variously interpreted as traditional allegories of the four elements or references to the seasons of the year. Aside from the iconological allusions, the painting gives Campi the occasion to stage a complex representation of the natural world. Campi's achievement, together with Arcimboldo's, was of major importance to the birth of the still-life in Lombardy.
