CANALETTO
(b. 1697, Venezia, d. 1768, Venezia)

Venice: The Grand Canal from Palazzo Flangini to the Church of San Marcuola

c.1738
Oil on canvas, 47 x 78 cm
Private collection

This picture is a supreme example of a distinct phase within Canaletto's production that lasted from the late 1730s until circa 1742, in which the warm sunshine so characteristic of his early maturity gives way to a cool, clear light, bringing with it a greater clarity and precision.
