CANALETTO
(b. 1697, Venezia, d. 1768, Venezia)

The Grand Canal Seen from Rialto toward the North

1725
Pen and brown ink on paper
Private collection

This is a composition sketch for an existing painting with the same title (1725, private collection).

The composition sketch for this painting surfaced some years ago. Except for a few details in the arrangement of the ships, the drawing agrees completely with the painting. The shadows, too, are indicated precisely. The sheet has been folded in half vertically, and the corner of Cà Pesaro, darkly sihouetted against the sky, is aligned precisely with this median axis.
