CARRACCI, Agostino
(b. 1557, Bologna, d. 1602, Bologna)

Landscape with Bathers

1597-99
Oil on canvas, 40 x 49 cm
Galleria Palatina (Palazzo Pitti), Florence

Like his brother Annibale, Agostino Carracci drew constantly from life. This landscape with its cool blue tones is constructed poetically to lead the eye gently toward the rise on the distant horizon. The nude men clambering onto the rocks above the lake may be a tribute to Michelangelo's influential cartoon for the Battle of Cascina in Florence's Council Chamber.
