Christ in Glory

1597-98
Oil on canvas, 194 x 142 cm
Galleria Palatina (Palazzo Pitti), Florence

An unusually young Christ is flanked by Peter and John the Evangelist. On the earthly level are Sts Mary Magdalen, Ermengild, and Edward the Confessor, name saint of the picture's patron, Cardinal Odoardo Farnese. The crawling figure in the middle ground recalls the fact that Edward is also the patron saint of the cripples.
