CARRACCI, Annibale
(b. 1560, Bologna, d. 1609, Roma)

Christ and the Woman of Samaria

1596-97
Oil on canvas, 77 x 64 cm
Szépművészeti Múzeum, Budapest

This episode from the Gospel of John is one of the most frequent subjects in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries for paintings made for private devotion. Carracci painted one larger version (now in the Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan) shortly before he moved to Rome in 1595, however, the present painting cannot be considered a replica of the Milanese painting. In addition to the different format, there are numerous compositional variants in the figures as well as the landscape that distinguish this canvas from the Brera painting.
