CELLINI, Benvenuto
(b. 1500, Firenze, d. 1571, Firenze)

Juno

c. 1540
Black chalk, 247 x 186 mm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

This drawing is related to a series of candlesticks designed for François I. In 1540 François I commissioned Cellini to make twelve monumental statue-candelabre in silver representing Olympian deities for the royal table. The second figure, Juno was probably executed only in wax, but its image survives in this drawing, which bears an annotation in Cellini's hand.
