CHAMPAIGNE, Philippe de
(b. 1602, Bruxelles, d. 1674, Paris)

Triple Portrait of Richelieu

c. 1640
Oil on canvas, 58 x 72 cm
National Gallery, London

Until 1643 Champaigne worked exclusively for Marie de Medici, Cardinal Richelieu and King Louis XIII. The triple portrait was a working model for the sculptor Francesco Mochi. Later he turned toward religious themes and his style showed the sign of classicism. At the same time he continued to paint portraits for commissions.
