The Judgment of Paris

1645-46
Oil on canvas, 112 x 150 cm
National Gallery of Art, Washington

The Judgment of Paris appeared on the art market in 1966. It was recognized as an autograph work, whose composition Claude had recorded in the drawing Liber Veritatis 94, and it can be considered a masterpiece of Claude's mature period in the 1640s. The figures in this painting are among the largest and most painstakingly executed in the artist's work. He worked out his ideas for their arrangement in a vigorous pen study. Claude borrowed certain details from Renaissance models, mining the engravings by Raimondi after Raphael and by Ghisi after Giovanni Battista Bertano.
