CLÉSINGER, Auguste
(b. 1814, Besançon, d. 1883, Paris)

Woman Bitten by a Snake (Femme piquée par un serpent)

1847
Marble, 56 x 180 x 70 cm
Musée d'Orsay, Paris

The artist's model was Baudelaire's muse, Apollonie Sabatier (1822-1890), a Parisian beauty who held a salon in Paris and was familiarly known as "La Présidente"; in lending her body to Clésinger she brought him unhoped-for success.
