The life-size, full-length portrait of Charles IX shows influences from Germany. The stance of the figure and the flat, almost heraldic treatment of the elaborately embroidered dress are close to portraits by Seisenegger dating from the 1530s.
The portrait conforms to a type of international Mannerist portraiture which spread over Europe in the second half of the sixteenth century, producing an exact parallel in Sanchez Coello in Spain and ending with the style of the Pourbus family at the turn of the century.
