The Masked Ball Given by the King

1745
Lead point, pen and ink, watercolour, 455 x 760 mm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

The picture shows the masked ball given by the king in the gallery of the château of Versailles on 25 February 1745. Below the magnificent ceiling and chandeliers, dense clusters of people give way before the comic costumes - some disguised as yew bushes, others in large Ottoman heads, still others as pilgrims - lending an exuberant atmosphere to the gallery. The sparkling, vibrant drawing conveys a world of sophisticated, droll enchantment.
