CORONA, Leonardo
(b. 1561, Murano, d. 1605, Venezia)

St Nicholas Aiding Shipwrecked Sailors in a Storm

-
Oil on canvas
San Nicolò dei Mendicoli, Venice

Corona was greatly influenced by Titian, Veronese, and Tintoretto. He experimented with chiaroscuro and the effects of light, with strongly Mannerist figures standing out against gloomy backgrounds.

The present painting is on the ceiling of the church of San Nicolò dei Mendicoli. The influence of Veronese, in the upward looking perspective, blends with that of Tintoretto, revealed in the execution of the foreshortening.
