This half-length portrait of a young man depicted against a neutral background in olive green was painted by Hans Cranach, the eldest son of Lucas the Elder. A portrait in the same format of a woman facing left against a green background (Musée du Petit Palais, Paris) may have been the companion piece of the male portrait, the two forming a diptych of a married couple.
