This 1502 panel painting is the first dated painting that we know from Cranach. The painter was then active in Vienna, in the circle of scholars around the "Archhumanist" Konrad Celtis. The panel exemplifies the expressive formal idiom of Cranach's Viennese years, to which artists of the so-called "Danube School" like Altdorfer should build on. Reminiscences of late Gothic Expressionism can be grasped as well as the deep impression of Dürer's only slightly older engravings. | |
