CRANACH, Lucas the Elder
(b. 1472, Kronach, d. 1553, Weimar)

Portrait of Elector Frederick the Wise

1530s
Oil on panel, 13 x 15 cm
Private collection

This small panel is one of the several portraits of Frederick the Wise painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder and his studio. It was probably the left wing of a diptych, the right wing being a portrait of his brother John the Steadfast. When the Elector Frederick the Wise died in 1525, Prince John the Steadfast succeeded him as Elector of Saxony and reigned until his death in 1532.
