CRUYL, Lieven
(b. ca. 1640, Gent, d. ca. 1720, Gent)

Sant'Ivo della Sapienza, Rome

1664
Engraving
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Lieven Cruyl made series of drawings as well as individual renderings of the landmarks of Rome. Several of the drawings were later engraved by himself. The present print shows the façade of Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza on Piazza Sant'Eustachio, in reversed view. The church must be regarded as Francesco Borromini's masterpiece, where his style reached its zenith and where he played all the registers at his command.
