The busts of the Parliamentarians was commissioned in 1832 by Charles Philipon, the director of La Caricature, and executed during actual sittings of the Chambre des Députés. These busts mark a total break with the tradition of the neoclassical portrait.Helped by acute powers of observation and a remarkably expressive talent as a draughtsman and modeller, Daumier tried to reveal the deep truth of his models through an uncompromising image enhanced by exaggeration and polychromy..
