DEFERNEX, Jean-Baptiste
(b. ca. 1729, Paris, d. 1783, Paris)

Madame Favart

1762
Terracotta, height 50 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

Madame Favart (born Marie-Justine Duronceray, 1727-1772) was one of the famous actresses of her time.

The dogged attachment to nature is characteristic of Defernex's style, and it is the hallmark of his portrait busts. All the graces and tender amorous atmosphere that floated about Madame Favart seem dispelled by his convincingly truthful bust of her.
